French content creator J0nathan has had his YouTube channel permanently deleted following a copyright and policy dispute over gameplay footage from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. The creator, who commanded 190,000 subscribers and relied on the platform as his primary source of income, lost a decade of hard work and over 3,000 archived videos in a single sweep.
The controversy centers around the opening sequences of the new horror title developed by Saber Interactive. The game kicks off with an explicit BDSM and sex scene featuring a topless woman followed by unfiltered male nudity. While the scene serves as a narrative catalyst for the story, it quickly became a massive compliance hurdle for video uploaders.
Anticipating content moderation issues ahead of release, Saber Interactive advised creators on social media to utilize proper age restrictions and sexual theme labels, noting that the game lacks a built-in “streamer mode” and that context and intent would dictate platform enforcement. However, J0nathan assumed that censoring the explicit portions with black boxes and marking the video as “Not Made for Kids” would satisfy platform requirements. He did not apply an explicit age restriction prior to publishing, expecting the platform to adjust classifications automatically as it often does for standard horror titles.
How the Hellraiser Revival YouTube Ban Unfolded
YouTube swiftly removed the video, penalizing the creator for violating its sex and nudity policies. According to automated support notifications received by J0nathan during his appeal, explicit content intended for sexual gratification is strictly prohibited. The streamer’s initial appeal was dismissed within minutes, leaving him with automated responses upholding the permanent channel termination.
Voicing frustration over inconsistent enforcement, J0nathan pointed out that uncensored footage of the exact same gameplay sequence remains actively hosted across various other channels on the platform. With zero prior strikes or warnings on his record across 10 years of content creation, the streamer expressed disbelief at the severity of the punishment.
Compounding his distress, J0nathan stated that attempts to reach out to developer contacts and fellow creators for assistance have yielded no results. Furthermore, platform rules prohibit banned users from operating alternate accounts under the threat of losing secondary channels, leaving him unable to pivot safely without risking further bans. IGN has reached out to Saber Interactive for comment regarding the situation.
