PlayStation has dropped a brand-new, public-facing survey for adults, and the gaming community is treating it like an open mic to sound off against Sony’s controversial hardware roadmap.
Launched on September 25, the survey follows hot on the heels of a separate questionnaire sent out to game developers. This latest open consultation dives deep into PlayStation 5 player satisfaction, quizzing fans on everything from exclusive software, user interface layout, and overall game performance to online matchmaking, the DualSense controller, and the breadth of the console’s library. Participants are also asked to catalog what other gaming hardware they own—ranging from the Nintendo Switch and gaming rigs to various VR headsets—with multiple open-ended prompts allowing users to elaborate on their choices.
While the survey does not explicitly feature a checkbox dedicated to physical media, it provides an undeniable opening for players to voice their discontent. The timing has fueled widespread speculation that Sony might be feeling the heat over its contentious decision to pull the plug on physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Ever since that announcement hit in July, it has been met with fierce pushback across the entire gaming ecosystem.
Players Take Aim at Sony
Social media has lit up with gamers sharing how they utilized the survey’s text fields to send a direct message to the manufacturer.
“I don’t think they are ready for the responses, but this survey is a sign that they are at the very least aware that their public image has taken a helluva kicking lately,” posted user @ThatGreenDude95 on X (formerly Twitter).
Another user, @BusterSwordBoi, added, “Filled it out. Respectfully told them they’ve been the worst all year lol.” Meanwhile, other players posted screenshots of their creative write-ins, with one user telling Sony: “To access this information, please insert the ‘my opinion’ disc into the disc drive, plus download the needed information from the internet.”
This consumer-facing questionnaire follows a massive developer poll distributed just days prior. Speaking on the Broken Silicon Podcast, host Tom characterized it as “one of the biggest” surveys developers had ever received from PlayStation, prompting similar industry speculation regarding whether Sony is second-guessing its aggressive push toward an all-digital future.
The Corporate Stance Remains Firm
Despite the overwhelming community backlash and rising speculation, company leadership has not officially backed down. During a July investor Q&A, chief financial officer Lin Tao acknowledged that the corporation is well-aware of the public’s “strong views” on the matter, but firmly insisted that leadership intends to “cautiously move this forward.”
Whether these wave-making community surveys signal a genuine change of heart behind closed doors or are simply an exercise in gauging PR damage remains to be seen. One thing is certain: players are refusing to let the era of physical media fade away quietly.
