The Dark Side of our Society

I know you didn’t read any new posts on our blog/magazine in the last few weeks (I think even more…!). Don’t worry, we didn’t forget the Rebel K-Mag! Personally, I was working very hard on game designing. And also writing for K-Magazine at the same time but without publishing any new posts yet. Even Mike, who sometimes used to post for the K Storm Studio, is actually busy coding.

In this post, I’d like to reflect on a complex and concerning aspect of our society today. As a video game developer, someone dedicated to creating experiences that foster passion, connection, and a sense of community, I believe it’s important to acknowledge and speak out when we witness shifts that may threaten those values. Remaining silent in the face of such changes would go against the very spirit of what we aim to build through our work.

The Dark Side of the Present time

The most relevant dark side of our modern society is determined by how big Leaders can easily attract and drive crowds! Please consider that this psychological side of power has existed since ever. But nowadays, it is stronger than ever. Why? Well, one of the reasons can be given by the Social Media and Smartphones combined. We actually know that social media are normally used as a powerful instrument for annihilating personality.

Don’t get me wrong. It is not the social media model, is the way they have been developed. (MySpace, the first social media ever, was a space where people used to spend time happily with others!)

It’s very easy now to drive people’s conviction. And it is so terrible to see how an instrument like a smartphone, designed to defeat distance barriers, is now used for political and psychological purposes!

Our freedom, our happiness, our well-being and our life can now depend on a few people!

Why games?

In this period of uncertainties and terrible menace coming from all around the World, every person may struggle to find the way to be himself again. The dark side of our society came out again and this time, it doesn’t seem that the people is able to recognize it.

While we’re playing games, we can explore new worlds and join new adventures! But we can also explore part of ourselves. I think that these are some of the main reasons why we all love games!

And these kinds of feelings are timeless! The modern game market is made by AAA game lovers as well as Indie game lovers. Players around the world want to try both 3D and 2D games. This aspect of the game industry makes the environment absolutely vibrant, creative and lovable, democratizing the industry itself. No matter if a game has been created by a solo developer or a gigantic studio, if you like it, you play it! (Consider this: big studios often started as a bedroom dev!)

This is also one of the reasons why, aside from 3D games, at K Storm Studio we have developed a 2D platformer game. Our Wild Radio Flux is a fully DLC-based game that wants to remember the time when people used to have fun together… and we want to create more and more, even about it!
